2008 GRAND NATIONAL WINNER – WINNERS, ARE THEY BORN OR MADE?

Winners don’t come much more determined than the 2008 Grand National Winners – Timmy Murphy, and his team. Even the words Grand National conjure up a sense of thrill but also a sense of anticipation. How do you plan and prepare to win such a horse racing event, what do you need to do to win such a race as the Grand National?

Imagine what was going through the winner’s minds at the beginning of this prestigious horse racing event, no doubt there would have been some mild trepidation. Overcoming personal addiction for Timmy Murphy meant the win would have been even sweeter.

Are winners born or are they made? I’m sure when the grand national race comes around there will be a lot of jockeys and trainers asking themselves this question, whether they are talking about the horse they are racing or the jockey who is riding. I am sure with the stunning result of the Olympics 2008 for the United Kingdom just around the corner this would have inspired those winners even more. Why don’t we explore more what made this 2008 Grand National winning team succeed like they did against such adversity?

The team is made up of these elements;

• The horse,
• The jockey
• The trainers
• The owners
• The stable hands

The great relationship they must all share from the trainer to the horse and the special relationship the jockey has with the horse, add to this they all have to be in the right emotional state the feat to win seems almost impossible. Everest and mountain come to mind.

All contributors have to have the winning elements to succeed, if they don’t posses the attitude of a Grand National winner then failure is a sure cert. The timing for each to peak to win this horse race all has to reach the top at the same time. I suppose in 2008 for the jockey he had been rock bottom so if the only way is up, then you just try and try again – not always do you get such an astonishing result though! But deservedly so, if a man can go through and come out the other side of addiction then full credit to him and his team around him for keeping the faith.

And, if we focus on what made the 2008 Grand National Winner then we can see it was about faith and a tonne of spirit (oh and a damn good horse!). If you don’t believe you are winners then you won’t do it, maybe sometimes you have to go through the hard stuff to taste the sweet smell of success, the proof is in the pudding or this case the horseracing!
